The Power of "What If..."

Go visit Scott Rocketship's newest web venture, "What If Des Moines". It's basically the same idea behind DMPerspective, except that he is able to distill the what ifs down to a single sentence, on a much more frequent and regular basis.

Reminds me quite a bit of another website called "People Who..." run by an evidently very snarky friend of a friend. The schtick is this: distill a rant dow to a single meaningful sentence and encourage people to respond with their own reactions and ideas. For example:

What if Des Moines had a movie theater downtown?

Yeah, for real. Let's talk about it. What does it mean for the Iowa's capital city that we don't have a state-of-the-art first-run movie theater downtown (or even close to downtown). The SCIMAX is awesome and all, but it doesn't count.

How cool would be to lead off a dinner-movie date night at a real restaurant like Centro or Americana or Rolling Wok or Open Sesame or Miyabi 9 (WTF, no website?) instead of the Cheesecake Factory?

In any case, with all the "best of" lists that Des Moines has recently topped, it is easy to take a lassaiz faire position on our fair city. Let's not get complacent... there is, in fact, room for improvement in many areas. The "What if Des Moines" website isn't going to solve any problems itself. Perhaps, however, it can help influence discussion, spark an idea, or make a connection between people who take us a little closer to our ideal.

Interesting website. Thanks for sharing!
